Editorial Final Shoot

Reflecting on my final editorial look

On Wednesday 28th November, I completed my final look for my editorial design. I felt nervous about doing the shoot and didn't feel 100% confident. This was something I wasn't used to, as I felt that for all my previous shoots I was confident and prepared. So this was a learning experience for me. Below I have listed a step by step guide for creating my hair and make-up looks.

I began by focusing on the make-up:

- First I applied white foundation all over the face.

- Then, using a black eyeliner I drew two equal sized circles around the eyes (including the eyebrows) and then coloured them in using Turquoise Supra colour.

- I then used an eye brush to apply different shades of blue eye shadow on top of the supra colour, to add more definition and for the Supra colour to stay in place.

- I then drew little flower petals around the blue circles using an eyeliner pencil

- I used the same pencil to draw skeletal lines onto the lips and fancy patterns on the cheeks.

- I added a silver gem onto the centre of the forehead

- Next, I used my blending brush and orange eye shadow to shade round the edge of the forehead and chin. I felt that this really brought the look to life, and the orange worked well with the turquoise.

- I then mixed up some rice and liquid latex to apply onto certain areas of the face and neck also.

- I arranged the rice into flower shapes onto the temples and waited for it to dry, to then paint orange Supra colour over the top.

- I did the same process on the neck, but I scattered the rice all over the neck, not creating any particular shapes or patterns.

Hair:

- I began by separating the hair into three sections, using my pintail comb.

- I then separated the first section into two again, as I was going to do two cornrows in the hair, and the same on the other side of the head.

- The middle section of the hair I planned to create a little bit of height by twisting and curling the hair into one long barrel shape down the head, and securing with grips.

- I sectioned off the front to make a large vintage esc quiff and secured with grips and hairspray.

- To achieve the barrel shape down the head, I sectioned the hair into three equal parts and tied with small elastics. This allowed me to work with smaller sections so I can pay close attention the shape I am creating.

- With each section I did a barrel curl and secured with grips and spray.

- Lastly I wrapped the ends of the cornrows around the barrel curl and secured with hairgrips.

Things to improve on/disappointments

I was disappointed at how long it took me to create the look, I have never taken this long to produce a look before so I was annoyed with myself as to how long I was in the studio for and for keeping my model waiting.

Also, looking back, I would have used more rice and had it going down the sides of the neck and lower down the chest. I think this would have looked so much better.

Furthermore, I would have applied an orange eye shadow to the neck before adding the rice.

Things that went well/Positives

I was pleased with my final outcome, and thought that it reflected my specific style.

Also, I was really pleased with the hairstyle, and was very proud of it. Furthermore, I think that my look did reflect my story board and matched the ideas I had. I also thought that my choice in model was perfect, she knew exactly the look I wanted to achieve and had the most perfect cheekbones! Brilliant!

Supra Colours

Using Supra Colours to create Catwalk look

To create these shapes and textures, I would use my Supra Colours, they give a nice dewy, finish. Once set with powder, the colour will stay in place and not crease on areas such as the eyelids. I would use these colours and a fine brush to create that lovely tribal tattoo, so it will look as real as possible.

The make-up on the face is just stunning. I like the blend of colours together. Also, I didn't want to use too many colours on the face as I didn't want the look to look too busy as the headdress will be the main focus of my look, and that will have an array of colours in it. Particularly if I am going to be doing body tattoos.

Fullers Earth

Practicing with Fullers Earth

A video tutorial to explain how fullers earth works, and how to paint over it. This is something we looked at briefly in class. Not in as much detail as this tutorial, which is why I would like to share it!

Fullers earth is not something that I had wanted to use for my look, but i am always changing my ideas and coming up with new ones that I never really know how my final design will look until on the very day!!!

This design I thought would look really good on the back of my model. My model is male, and so I would love to create different patterns and textures on the body. Whether that is a tattoo on the arm like my previous post, or a large tribal pattern on the back.

These designs are so intricate and reflect a tribal theme, I would like to try to re-create one of these looks!

Tribal Dance Festival- Catwalk research

Goroka Show tribal dance festival, Goroka, Papua New Guinea

After doing some more research for my Catwalk look, I stumbled across a page filled with lots of images from a tribal dance festival in Papua, New Guinea. I was fascinated by all of the images, and now I want to practice some of these looks!!

 This is something similar to what I had in mind for my tribal look. This headdress is beautiful and the feathers are so detailed, I would think about re-creating this pattern on the skin.

Catwalk Ideas

Branching out from my ideas

I want the 'Native American' Tribe to be the basis of my inspiration for my Catwalk look. I have already decided that I plan on using a feather headpiece, but now I want to add to these ideas with some inspirations from other tribes.

As shown in my mood board, I want their to be a splash of colour on the face, during inspiration from this image below.

I love the simplicity yet intricacy of this design, however, i would possibly like to recreate something like this on my models back or upper arm.

 This is a look I had in mind from day one. I love how just the use of black and white can be so effective especially with a colourful headdress, I do not want too much going on in this look. It has to be practical as well providing it is m catwalk look.

I am really intrigued and inspired by the hand markings on the body in this image, they are really effective, this is something I will have to have a play around with before I shoot my final look. I also feel that it ties the whole look together!
